MANDINGOHOOD

MANDINGOHOOD

“Strange Embrace”

My youthful obsession with carved African masks grew and grew—until the old mansion was full of African artifacts—I spent my whole life in the house—never leaving it—I was a withdrawn youth—my wealthy father dealing in expensive antiques—my mother in an insane asylum—African art fired my obsession with amassing a vast private collection of tribal carvings—these figures had a life of their own—roaming up & down the stairs and thru the hallways—surrounding me night & day in my bed—this shadowy world I lived in—right out of an expressionistic nightmare—my Cabinet of Dr. Caligari world—with its disturbing angular perceptions and unsettling moods—but not as moody and unsettling as my Mandingo mind.
